Virtual public forum offered for community input on plans for 2021-22 budget

BEAUFORT – A virtual public forum presentation is being offered for community members to learn more about the school district budget being developed by the Beaufort County Board of Education for the 2021-22 school year.

The district hopes the new virtual format will provide more people an opportunity to participate in the forum process. “One bright spot that has come to light this year is the accessibility that Zoom meetings have afforded for community engagement,” said Superintendent Frank Rodriguez. “In many instances, we have had increased parental and community participation in meetings held virtually because of the ease of logging in from one’s home without having to arrange childcare or interrupt one’s schedule.”

The virtual public forum video presentation can be viewed on the district’s YouTube page at any time through June 30, 2021.

Viewers of the presentation have the opportunity to make comments and ask questions by submitting them to budget@beaufort.k12.sc.us or calling 843-322-5928. Responses to questions will be answered on the phone or followed-up shortly thereafter via email.

“Developing the school district’s annual budget is one of the district’s most important tasks, and that process needs to be public and transparent,” said Chief Financial Officer Tonya Crosby.  “We want feedback from parents and community members on next year’s preliminary budget proposals, and we hope people will view our virtual forum presentation so they can learn more.”

The district will receive community input over the next several weeks. Beaufort County Council’s current timeline calls for a third and final reading of the district’s budget on June 28.
