May River High senior announced
as National Merit Scholarship winner

BLUFFTON – A May River High School senior is among the first group of 2019 winners in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Faith Shupard has been announced as the winner of the National Merit Gulfstream/Rolls Royce Annual Scholarship.  She is among more than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors across the nation to win corporate-sponsored scholarships.

Shupard will attend Clemson University in the fall and is considering a career in veterinary medicine.

“We’re very proud of Faith, and her future certainly looks bright,” said Interim Superintendent Herb Berg.  “She is an outstanding representative for May River High and also for the Beaufort County School District.”

Three other district students previously named as 2019 finalists in addition to Shupard remain in the running for National Merit Scholarships that will be announced later this spring.  Those three seniors are Pierce Daly (Hilton Head Island High), Meaghan Lyons (Hilton Head Island High) and Alan Wiser (Beaufort High).

They are competing with 15,000 national finalists for 7,500 college scholarships worth more than $31 million.

About 1.6 million high school juniors from more than 22,000 American high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To advance to the final round of competition, each semifinalist had to submit a detailed application that provided information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, honors and awards.  In addition, each semifinalist had to be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirmed the student’s earlier score on the qualifying test.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. is a nonprofit established in 1955, and its scholarships are underwritten by NMSC with its own funds and more than 400 businesses and higher education institutions.
