Classroom Whodunit

Upperclassmen taking Biomedical Science at Beaufort High School are faced with a crime scene investigation, during which they utilize the scientific method and various experiments to determine whether the “victim” died of natural causes or from a criminal act. Led by teacher Brad Smith, the students create an evidence wall and apply investigative tactics. They run toxicology and blood-typing reports, analyze the physics of blood splatter, learn about DNA testing and conduct temperature-related experiments. This “crime scene” theme engages students in a multifaceted lesson teaching high-level STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills.  And as an added bonus, the classes get “real-world” assistance from Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.
